Walter Sobchak Welcomes Beckham

I found this picture on Sport5 website, and I knew I had to put it here. The sign is in reference to David Beckham, and the guy who hold the amazingly resembles Walter Sobchak, John Goodman’s character in The Big Lebowski my all-time favorite. And the writing on the sign has the same attitude, as if he was saying: “This is what happens when you f#$% a stranger in the ass!”
Welcome Beckham, The Big Lebowski Style

Don’t Bite The Foot That Feeds You

David Beckham Debut in Los Angeles Galaxy
I’ve already stated before, that it is very hard to be a soccer fan in America. It became much easier since David Beckham joined the LA Galaxy, or even better since he made his debut a couple of days ago Vs. Chelsea. However, despite the rising popularity of the game here, when I watch the soccer channels I often hear the commentators complain about the Media Circus surrounding Beckham’s arrival. Do you get this? Media Circus. Instead of embracing the moment, and enjoy the new audience you complain. Oh shut up!!! Go get another job.
David Beckham may not be the greatest soccer player of all time, but he is by far the biggest caliber to ever land in the MLS. Beckham’s success here is important to everyone who is connected to soccer in America. So please FSN and GolTV, don’t bite the hand then feeds you.

The Good News: America Still Hates On Posh, The Bad News: NBC Doesn’t

MR_16539pcn_Posh05.jpgMR_16539pcn_Posh04.jpgVictoria Beckham didn’t waste any time capitalizing on her hubby’s deal with the LA Galaxy to further catapult her career as a professional celebrity. Her Monday night special, Coming To America, testified to that. And although the special picked up decent enough ratings for the silicone-breasted bronzed kewpie doll to get a repeat performance tonight on NBC, the show didn’t manage to do much in the way of swaying American populace opinion of the star. In other words as a publicity agent, the show failed miserably in that people still consider her to be a self-involved bitch. On the flipside, execs at NBC were so impressed with her that they decided that not only will they re-air the special tonight, but have her host the whole Thursday night line-up on NBC. To include extra Beckham footage, NBC hauled ass back to the Beckhams and managed to secure some interstitials in time for tonight. Victoria was said to be most obliging. GO figure!

When A Brazilian Sees An Argentinian Shirt…

By ariel in Uncategorized, News, Amaldo' Home, sports, NBA, soccer, Football, Copa America, Brazil, Argentina on July 16 2007

argentina_home_0506.jpgNow, that soccer is the most talked about sport in America, at least since the Beckhams has arrived, it’s easier for me to write about it. A couple of weeks back, I wrote a short post about the Copa America, the American soccer tournament, equivalent in a way to the UEFA EURO, the national team championship. The final of the Copa brought us a rivalry game. Argentina Vs. Brazil. Argentina played an amazing game all along the tournament and were definitely the best team around. The Brazilians on the other hand, played a sad version of the game. But they knew when to show up. It all changes for the Brazilian team, when they see the white and light blue Argentinian shirt in front of them, and yesterday’s final was no different. At the end after a very convincing game Brazil won the game 3-0. All that’s left for us the Argentina fans, is to congratulate Brazil, and wait for the next time. And regarding the sad game, well, I guess it’s OK, I mean, the San Antonio Spurs won a few NBA titles with a sad and boring game…

David Beckham, Hollywood Style

Beckham In La.jpgvictoria_beckham_david_beckham.jpgHow to promote an unpopular sport, step by step, by the Los Angeles Galaxy. You got to hand it to the Los Angeles Galaxy. They sure know how to rock the world, literally. So how do you do it?
Step 1: Location! Location! Location!  Hollywood is the only place to bring the Beckhams to, money, spotlight, cellebrities. We’ll get to that later.
Step 2: Find your man. Find the most famous soccer player in the world, who is also good at what he does, meaning a real fighter on the pitch with natural talent and proven experience.
Step 3: Open your pockets. When Real Madrid bought David Beckham from Manchester United they paid $33 million Euro for him. It took them only six months to cover this expense. So when the Galaxy pay him $250 millions for five years, they know what they are doing.
Step Four: Cherchez La Femme. One of the most important steps of all. You can love or hate Victoria Beckham, but she is an icon. You must not ignore her and her every caprice. Actually, she is the one you have to talk to even before you talk to David Beckham himself. I mean, it’s quit obvious who call the shots  right? So how do you do it? First you hook her up with the hottest and most paparazzi-stalked couple around, and if Brangelina are not around Tom and Katie Cruise will do just fine. Then you put her in the spotlight. But remember it has to be in the middle of the spotlight. You make an NBC Victoria Beckham- Coming to America special, you put her in the Morning show, The Tonight Show, The Whatever show, and she is happy. And if Victoria is happy, everybody is happy.
The Fifth and last step is the introduction: I have seen many soccer players being introduced to the public by their new clubs. But I have to admit, I have never seen something like what I saw at the Home Depot Center, home of the Los Angeles Galaxy. It was as if David Beckham was getting a lifetime achievement award for something he hasn’t really done yet. Amazing.
And even before King David even touched a soccer ball in America, marketing wise, he already does to soccer what his idol Michael Jordan (That’s why he is wearing the number 23, not because of the Jim Carrey movie…) did to Basketball. Now everyone in America knows what the rest of the world knows for years, Who is David Beckham.

Copa America 2007

By ariel in Uncategorized, Entertainment, sports, soccer, America on June 29 2007

It’s funny, but one of the biggest sports events in the continent is going almost unnoticed here in the US. The 2007 Copa America in Venezuela is on it’s way. It is the American soccer championship for national teams. By the way, the US is also participating in the tournament, although it was defeated last night 4-1 by the team I root for, Argentina. If you are even just a little soccer fan, you can catch the games on Goltv. Argentina is favorite to win, especially after the Brazilian team lost 0-2 to Mexico.

The Spice is Back(ham)

katieposhcorp1.jpgThe biggest announcement in the history known to man will be given next week. The Spice Girls are coming back! Yes, Sporty, Posh, Baby, Ginger and Scary will reunite to make a new album and a tour. Now that David Beckham is coming to Los Angeles to play Soccer for the Galaxy, his wife Victoria was a bit concerned whether people would recognize her or not. Now she doesn’t need to worry about it any more, she will be Posh again. I always find these showbiz coincidences somewhat odd… Any way, if Gery Halliwell who was the first to leave the band in 98′, decides she doesn’t want to join the party, fear not, Katie Holmes would kill for a chance to be in the band, and to sing and perform alongside her idols.

So Tell Me What You Want, What You Really Really Want

cruise_holmes320.jpgLast night Real Madrid won the Spanish Soccer championship for the 30th time in the club history, and the first in 4 years. This would not interest many people in the US if it wasn’t for the pop culture angle of it. As a huge Soccer fan I set to watch the game on GOLTV, and to my surprise I saw Tom Cruise in the crowd standing next to two Victoria\Posh\ Spice Beckham(s). They all came of course to support David Beckham in his last game in Spain before the big move to California, where he will play for the LA Galaxy. But oh my god! One of the two was Katie Holmes, and to that I have to say: If you wanna be a wannabe, don’t be a wannabe’s wannabe, Capiche?

You’re The Real Thing

The greatest of them all, Maradona

American sports are great. I am a huge fan of Football and Basketball, and since I lived in the Fenway Park area in Boston, I can really enjoy a good Baseball game (especially a Red Sox game). But there is one sport I can’t live without, and that’s Football (AKA Soccer). And as the European Champions League reaches its final stages, I would like to wish all the Ultras of the world success with your teams.

Self-Deprecating Is The Spring Fashion Palette of Choice For David Beckham

By Beth in Uncategorized, sports, soccer, Posh on April 6 2007

Responding to whether or not people in America could appreciate soccer like they do baseball or football, David Beckham, international star and newly drafted LA Galaxy star player, “I would be stupid to think I can make it (soccer) as big as baseball, basketball and American Football.” Qualifying the statement, Becks went on to say, “That is not going to happen …. probably half of America hasn’t even heard of me.”

Dude, David. If we haven’t heard of you, we definitely remember seeing your abs, not to mention your skeletal frame of a Posh wife.
