Dame Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas got it right. Big Girls Don’t Cry
But do they get piss poor drunk (for the umpteenth time), forget their lines onstage, proceed to say “F*ck! F*ck! F*ck!” while repeatedly hitting their head with a microphone, and then proceed to spit at the crowd after being a no-show at several other scheduled live gigs in the past few months?
So Amy Winehouse is back in the media whirlwind for her behaviour while onstage at the Eden Project this week. While Amy’s actions have been linked to the two bottles of Champagne, two bottles of Jack Daniels, and two bottles of red wine found in her trailer, one has to wonder if she’s trying to conceal something a bit bigger. Like maybe this girl with the amazing voice is simply a manufactured product of a British recording studio. Conspiracy theories aside, the self-destructive rockstar diva bit is getting old.

Because we love Amy Winehouse at Amaldo.com, we’re disheartened to hear more bad news from London where she stormed out of a restaurant when friends confronted Amy after she ordered only vodka, champagne, and 7-Up. Unhappy with her friends’ concern/re: criticism of her choice in libation, Amy left the restaurant. The jazz-pop singer has been in the news lately after a much-publicizedcutting episode and for pulling out of concert engagements.

For as long as the U.S. has been around, it’s been cool to copy our mother country England. Whether by boob tube (”The Office,” “Three’s Company”), musician (The Beatles, Mick Jagger, Coldplay), or trendsetter (Posh Spice, James Bond (yes, i know he’s not a REAL person), it’s all the rage to be an Anglo-wannabe and to exist wholeheartedly in this subtext of superficial existence.
Just ask Gwyneth Paltrow or Katie Holmes.
So when I hear things like the outrageous singer Pink wants to do a duet with Amy Winehouse or fellow pop-Brit Lily Allen simply for the reason that both are “interesting pop stars that like to party, drink, and act crazy,” I think to myself somewhere off over the trans-Atlantic, some poor girl with an ounce of talent and a whole lot of angst, must be cutting herself. Not to take this matter lightly or anything, but if Pink said something like this about me, I think I’d just about have to hit the bottle. So what’s next? Posting an ad for “Crazy Bitches Who Can’t Sing But Want To Do Duets With Pop Stars Who Can But Like To Drink, Party, & Get Fucked Up” on Meetup.com or Facebook.com?
Seriously Pink needs to get a clue. And poor Lily and Amy. Someone tell them to run, not walk, from the nearest MTV recording studio.

Amy Winehouse’s latest public display of daddy-didn’t-love-me enough f*cked up starlet on coke is all the news in Britain. In the U.S., we have Paris Hilton to fill this role, but ok, ok, that designation doesn’t do justice to Amy’s talent or level of genuine self-destructive behavior.
So what’s the 23-year-old’s latest controversy that’s got everyone talking both her and abroad?
In a photo shoot for Spin magazine this past week, Amy took to picking up a piece of broken mirror and carving her stomach with the words “I Love You Blake” on her belly. Blake Fielder-Civil would be Amy’s husband of one month who was filming the shoot and caught the glass-cutting episode (sure to be sold to the highest British tabloid buyer when marriage goes sour). Amy later scoffed at her behavior likening her cutting episode with “chicken scratch.”
Still, in Amy’s defense glass cutting can’t be all the much of a departure from tattoo sleeves. What’s one sterile form of self-mutilation among body art aficionados?

What’s up with Amy Winehouse lately? From being one of our blog’s favorite songstresses (together with Regina Spector) to showing up drunk to interviews and concerts, and smacking her bitch, er husband, up, Amy seems to be moving a bit too fast. Take it easy Amy. You’re still young, and not a superstar yet, and remember, what goes up high, inevitably hits the ground with a thud. And a loud one at that.

“Once” Soundtrack (Canvasback Records) – Glen Hansard (front man for Irish rockers The Frames) and Marketa Irglova have put together what will easily be my Soundtrack of the year and as emotionally invigorating and inspiring a collection of songs as I have heard in some time. As good as the Soundtrack is, it is even more compelling after you view the film. I highly recommend checking out both. Standout tracks include “When Your Mind’s Made Up”, “Falling Slowly”, “Trying To Pull Myself Away”, “If You Want Me”, and “Once”. In a world of pre-packaged corporate bullshit and hype, this music and film cleanse the pallet and quince the purist’s thirst.
Rocky Votolato “The Brag and Cuss” (Barsuk) – Between this CD and Willy Mason’s “If The Ocean Gets Rough” (Astralwerks), modern folk music is alive and well. Votolato continues to impress me with his old soul, thought provoking lyrics, and ease on down the road melodies and this is by far his greatest collection of songs.
Amy Winehouse “Back To Black” (Universal Republic) – Yes, I am still enamored with this CD and if you haven’t noticed, Winehouse is creating a quiet storm by selling a whole lot of CDs every week under the radar. Sure, there is some hype, but I don’t think there is enough and I kind of like it that way. While everyone else is “STILL” worried about and obsessed with first week sales numbers, Winehouse steadily is selling 30K to 50K a week and the momentum doesn’t appear to be slowing. Gotta love an artist development story like this one. Isn’t that what music
is supposed to be about?
John Doe –“A Year In The Wilderness” (Yep Roc) – Like a fine Cabernet, Doe just gets better and better with age and this is his BEST solo record to date. Throw in duets with Kathleen Edwards ( “The Golden State” is a perfect song), Jill Sobule and Amie Mann, and X is alive an well and sounding as fresh as ever. I love cheering for this guy and nothing makes me happier than when a new CD from him shows up on my desk. Go John Doe Go!
I’m From Barcelona “Let Me Introduce My Friends” (Mute) – I might have mentioned before that I was late coming to the party on this one as it got lost in a sea of promos but better late than never in this case as it is going to be one of my favorite releases of the year. I’m a sucker for great pop music and this Swedish collective has made one of the smartest, infectious, rollicking pop records of the decade. If you can sit still while listening to this CD and not sing along and shake your ass then I feel for ya. Pure pop goodness as its finest. Don’t miss out on this one.

British singer Amy Winehouse married her fiance, Blake Fielder-Civil in Miami Beach yesterday. The civil union was simple with a clerk presiding over the event and a poolside reception hosted by Amy’s management company, following a $6 wedding breakfast of burger and fries. As for money for the honeymoon, which unfortunately won’t be this week as Amy is scheduled to be in LA for a video shoot (although you never know who she’ll blow off) exclusive wedding pics were sold to an undisclosed magazine for £250,000. That’s what I call leaving a nice tip for the photographer.

Breakout phenom British singer Amy Winehouse (who could be a stand-in for Diana Ross circa The Supremes) is getting married this Summer and wants a traditional Jewish wedding. Unfortunately for Amy, her fiance is not Jewish which requires that he undergo the necessary conversion before he can be “fit” to go under the Chupah. The glitch is that the wedding is slated for the Summer and a typical conversion can take over a year (not including circumcision). Clearly Winehouse found a more (er, um) lenient rabbi to perform the conversion.
Well Kudos to Amy and Mazel Tov on the marriage. We only hope it lasts longer than fellow Jewish mystical follower Britney Spears.

British Jazzy singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse is everywhere these days. In Britian, she’s been a pop icon/spectacle for a some time now, doing the club circuit with such privileged British brats as Kelly Osbourne. With a personal life weighed down with talk of week-long benders and eating disorders, Winehouse isn’t known for being too stable and could probably put both Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan to shame in the “party girl” persona dept.Admittedly, Winehouse feels the genuine article, a bit more affable in her struggles, and she’s got the chops to back it. When I saw her video play after watching an episode of “Real World: Denver,” I knew she was headed to a career of being the “it” girl and destined to be the songstress providing the credit music and video for MTV for such shows as “The Hills” and “The Newlyweds: [Some Other Couple Headed For Divorce After The Show Wraps Up]
Anyways, to see a clip from Amy’s soulful, retro ’60s-style latest album, go here. I dare you not to fall in love with her sound.
